Oura: What the Research Says About Each Metric

Oura built its identity around sleep and a daily Readiness Score, and in 2025 became the first major ring brand to ship a live glucose-monitoring integration.

Oura's approach centers on sleep as the foundation, with most other metrics feeding into either the Sleep Score or the Readiness Score rather than standing on their own. Below is what independent research and Oura's own support documentation say about each metric it tracks, plus a real, recent capability none of the other four brands here currently ship.

How Does Oura Measure HRV?

Oura doesn't display raw HRV directly. It reports "HRV Balance," a derived score comparing a rolling two-week HRV average against a personal three-month baseline, which then feeds into the Readiness Score.

What Oura calls it

"HRV Balance." A ring's HRV Balance and a watch's raw HRV number are not measuring the same thing, even though both use variants of the same RMSSD calculation underneath.

How Does Oura Measure Resting Heart Rate?

Oura reports the lowest heart rate recorded, generally captured overnight, which is a different measurement window from Apple's daytime-stillness sampling or Garmin's 30-minute rolling average.

What Oura calls it

"Resting Heart Rate," same label as every other brand, overnight-only capture specific to Oura's ring form factor.

How Does Oura Calculate Its Sleep Score?

Oura's Sleep Score is built from seven inputs: total sleep time, efficiency, restfulness, REM duration, deep sleep duration, sleep latency, and timing consistency, the most stage-architecture-heavy formula among the major sleep-scoring brands.

What Oura calls it

"Sleep Score." Whoop leans on performance and consistency framing instead, and Garmin folds in an HRV-derived stress signal neither Oura nor Whoop include, so the same numeric score across brands isn't measuring the same combination of things.

What Does Oura's Readiness Score Actually Measure?

Readiness combines recent activity, sleep patterns, resting heart rate, HRV, and body temperature into one 0-100 score, Oura's answer to Whoop's Recovery Score and Garmin's Body Battery.

What Oura calls it

"Readiness Score." Oura also offers "Resilience" and a Cardiovascular Age estimate, both distinct, separately-calculated features covered below rather than folded into the daily Readiness number.

Worth knowing

A real peer-reviewed evaluation found composite scores like Readiness, Whoop's Recovery Score, and Garmin's Body Battery are not methodologically equivalent to each other, despite similar-sounding names and overlapping inputs.

What Does Oura's Resilience Score Measure?

Resilience reflects how well a person's body balances physiological stress against recovery over time, built from three components, daytime stress load, daytime recovery, and nighttime recovery, each drawn from heart rate, HRV, motion, and body temperature. Oura reports it on a rolling 14-day basis across five levels, from Limited to Exceptional, rather than as a single day's number the way Readiness is.

What Oura calls it

"Resilience." Unlike Readiness, which resets each morning, Resilience needs at least five days of complete data within the trailing 14 to update, and roughly ten days of wear for a new ring to establish a personal baseline.

Worth knowing

Resilience is a proprietary Oura calculation. No independent peer-reviewed validation of the score itself was found during research for this page, separate from the individually-validated inputs, HRV and heart rate, that feed into it.

How Accurate Is Oura's Cardiovascular Age Estimate?

Cardiovascular Age estimates the health of a person's cardiovascular system relative to their actual age. It's derived from overnight photoplethysmography (PPG) readings, the same sensor Oura uses for HRV and blood oxygen, run through a deep-learning model trained to infer pulse wave velocity and shape changes in the heartbeat signal associated with vascular aging.

What Oura calls it

"Cardiovascular Age." It requires at least 14 nights of data within the trailing 30 to calibrate a first baseline reading, and factors like diet, exercise, blood pressure, and smoking can shift the estimate independent of chronological age.

Worth knowing

A study from the National University of Singapore's Centre for Sleep and Cognition, published in PLOS Digital Health, validated the approach against clinical measurements and found a mean error of six to seven years, developed in partnership with board-certified cardiologists.

How Does Oura's Blood Oxygen Sensing Work?

Oura's Blood Oxygen Sensing is overnight-only by design, measuring during sleep periods longer than three hours and reporting Average Blood Oxygen alongside a separate Breathing Regularity score. There is no daytime spot-check on Oura, unlike Apple's or Garmin's on-demand options.

What Oura calls it

"Blood Oxygen Sensing (SpO2)." Fitbit takes yet another approach, reporting a relative overnight variation graph instead of a percentage at all, so four brands, four genuinely different designs for the same sensor category.

Does Oura Track Blood Glucose?

Yes, and Oura is ahead of every other brand on this page. In 2025, Oura launched a live, two-way data integration with Dexcom's Stelo continuous glucose monitor, following a reported $75 million investment from Dexcom. The Glucose feature shows daily readings set against meals, sleep, stress, and activity.

What Oura calls it

Available in the US only, requires a separate Stelo sensor purchased alongside the ring, and works with Oura Ring Gen 3 and Gen 4. Whoop has discussed exploring similar glucose integration but had not shipped an equivalent feature as of this writing.

What Oura Doesn't Do

One real, structural absence tied to the form factor.

No ECG feature

A ring doesn't have room for the electrode setup an ECG requires, so unlike Apple's Watch or Fitbit's Sense 2, Oura has no electrocardiogram feature.

If sleep quality and a single daily readiness number matter most, and a ring form factor over a watch or band appeals, Oura's sleep-first design and its head start on glucose integration are real differentiators. If you specifically want ECG or a watch-style always-visible display, that's not what a ring gives you.
