Dexcom Stelo: What the Research Says About Glucose Monitoring

The first over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor cleared by the FDA, no prescription required. Here's what's actually verified about it.

Stelo is Dexcom's glucose sensor built for people who don't have diabetes and aren't on insulin, sold directly to consumers rather than through a doctor. It's the same underlying sensor category as Dexcom's prescription G7, adapted for an over-the-counter market. Below is what's actually verified about what it measures, how it's cleared, and where the evidence on non-diabetic CGM use stands, separate from marketing claims made by comparison sites that don't cite a primary source.

What Does Stelo Actually Measure?

Stelo is a transcutaneous sensor worn on the back of the upper arm that measures interstitial glucose (glucose in the fluid between cells, a close proxy for blood glucose) continuously, displaying a glucose graph, trend arrows, and Time in Range, the clinical-standard metric for what percentage of the day glucose stays within a target band.

Dexcom's own materials note that roughly 78 percent of sensors last the full 15-day wear period, meaning about one in five doesn't. Stelo is explicitly not recommended for anyone with problematic hypoglycemia, and Dexcom's own guidance is not to take medical action based on a Stelo reading alone without consulting a clinician.

Is Stelo FDA Cleared?

Yes. The FDA cleared the "Stelo Glucose Biosensor System" (applicant: Dexcom, Inc.) on March 5, 2024, as a traditional 510(k) clearance, the first over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor cleared for sale without a prescription in the U.S. The FDA later cleared it for use by children aged 2 and up who aren't on insulin.

FDA clearance establishes that the device met the agency's safety and performance requirements for its stated intended use. It does not mean the device has been independently validated for the specific question of interpreting glucose patterns in a healthy, non-diabetic adult using it out of general curiosity, which is a separate, newer research question covered below.

How Accurate Is Stelo?

Multiple third-party CGM-comparison sites report a MARD (Mean Absolute Relative Difference, the standard accuracy measure for glucose sensors) figure for Stelo somewhere in the high single digits, generally described as close to Dexcom's prescription G7. None of the specific percentages in wide circulation were traceable to Dexcom's own primary published accuracy statement or to the FDA clearance summary itself during research for this page, despite checking Dexcom's own site and attempting to retrieve the FDA's underlying review document directly.

Worth knowing

What Does the Research Actually Say About Non-Diabetic CGM Use?

Separately from Stelo as a specific product, a growing body of research looks at what continuous glucose data means for people without diabetes: whether the glucose spikes a CGM shows in a healthy person carry the same significance they would in someone with impaired glucose control, and whether wearing a CGM changes eating or exercise behavior just by being worn.

That evidence base is real but still developing, newer and thinner than the decades of diabetes-management CGM research it's often compared against.

No other wearable metrics

Stelo is a glucose sensor only. It doesn't track HRV, sleep, steps, or heart rate the way a watch or ring does; Oura's app is the one live integration on this site pairing Stelo's data with a wrist/ring device's own metrics.

Not for insulin users or diagnosed diabetics

Stelo's clearance and Dexcom's own guidance are specific to people 18 and up (or 2 and up for the pediatric clearance) who are not on insulin. It is a wellness product, not a diabetes-management device.

Stelo's real differentiator is showing Time in Range directly, unmodified, the same framework a clinical CGM user would already recognize, rather than abstracting it into a proprietary score the way Abbott's Lingo does. What it can't offer yet is a confirmed, primary-source accuracy figure or a settled research base on what its data means for someone who isn't managing a diagnosed condition.
