What your HRV number means, what moves it, and how to read it without overreacting to a single morning.

Heart rate variability is one of the most watched and least understood numbers on a wearable. It swings with sleep, stress, alcohol, illness, and training, which makes a single reading hard to interpret and a trend worth watching. Here's what the research says it means, what's been shown to move it, and where the science still isn't settled.

Two of these five devices, Oura and Garmin, never show a raw HRV number at all, only a derived score (HRV Balance, or Body Battery/HRV Status) that uses HRV as one input among several. Apple, Whoop, and Fitbit do show the actual millisecond figure, though Whoop and Fitbit tuck it into a secondary screen rather than the main daily view. Your ring's HRV Balance and your watch's HRV number are not measuring the same thing, even though every device here is using some variant of RMSSD under the hood.
