Reference resting HRV (RMSSD) for men and women aged 50 to 59, how to read a wearable reading against it, and what the evidence says a high or low number means at this age.

For a woman in her early 50s, the median resting HRV is 26.6 ms, falling to 22.5 ms by her late 50s. For a man the median is 23.7 ms in the early 50s and 21.0 ms in the late 50s. Those are RMSSD medians from 10-second resting ECGs in healthy Dutch adults, and the normal range is very wide: for women aged 50 to 54 it runs from 7.5 to 96.3 ms. One thing matters more in this decade than earlier: the reference group excluded anyone with high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or obesity, and anyone on beta blockers or antidepressants. If any of those apply, this table describes a healthier group than your peers. And a ring or watch reading, taken overnight, is a different measurement from the ECG behind it.

Median HRV for your 50s, by sex

RMSSD in milliseconds from 10-second resting ECGs. "Range" runs from the 2nd to the 98th percentile, which covers 96 percent of the healthy people in each group. Source: Lifelines Cohort Study, 84,772 Dutch adults with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and obesity excluded, along with anyone taking beta blockers or antidepressants. Group sizes: 50 to 54, 4,907 women and 3,396 men; 55 to 59, 2,422 women and 1,650 men.

Who the reference group left out

The Lifelines values were built from 153,793 ECGs, and 64,433 people were removed before the reference was calculated: everyone with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes or obesity, and everyone using antidepressants, beta blockers or other drugs that act on the vagus nerve (European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, 2020). That makes it a clean reference for healthy hearts. It also means a 55-year-old on blood pressure medication is being compared with a group chosen to exclude people like them.

Some of those drugs have their own effect on HRV. GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic raise resting heart rate by about 6.6 to 8.1 beats per minute and lower HRV in trials in people with type 2 diabetes, which our desk rates Established (Ozempic and HRV). For beta blockers and antidepressants the evidence is mixed, covered in beta blockers and HRV and antidepressants and HRV.

The gap between men and women is small in the 50s

Between 45 and 59, women's median HRV ran an average of 2.53 ms higher than men's, down from about 5 ms in younger adults, and above 60 the authors report no difference (European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, 2020). By the late 50s the two medians are 22.5 and 21.0 ms. In practice, sex barely changes how a reading in this decade should be read; age band does. The HRV by age page has every group.

Note also that averages run well above medians. For men aged 55 to 59 the mean was 26.2 ms against a median of 21.0, because a small number of very high values pull the average up. A figure labelled "average HRV for a 55 year old" will usually be the higher one.

Reading an overnight number against a daytime table

Fitbit and Pixel Watch compute RMSSD over the longest sleep period (Google documentation), Oura shows a night-time average built from five-minute samples (Oura documentation), and Apple Watch reports SDNN, which is a different calculation (Apple HealthKit documentation). The reference table comes from a 10-second daytime ECG. Across 8,203,261 Fitbit users, HRV varied strongly with time of day (The Lancet Digital Health, 2020), so the overnight and daytime figures are not interchangeable.

Within the overnight figure, accuracy differs by device: against an ECG over 536 nights, mean absolute percentage error was 5.96 percent for Oura Gen 4, 8.17 percent for Whoop 4.0, 10.52 percent for Garmin Fenix 6 and 16.32 percent for Polar Grit X Pro (Physiological Reports, 2025). Our desk rates wearable HRV accuracy Uncertain. The steadier use of a device reading is your own direction over weeks, which a sudden HRV drop and low HRV but feeling fine cover.

What separates one 55 year old from another

In 149,205 Lifelines adults, age and sex explained 17.4 percent of the differences in HRV between people, while activity, alcohol, smoking, stress, social well-being and neuroticism together added less than half a percent (Heart Rhythm, 2018). Much of the difference between two healthy people of the same age is not explained by anything measured. Within one person the number does move with drinking and with training, both of which our desk rates Established.

Common questions

What is a good HRV for a 50 year old man?

The median RMSSD for men aged 50 to 54 is 23.7 ms, falling to 21.0 ms at 55 to 59. The range covering 96 percent of healthy men aged 50 to 54 runs from 6.7 to 87.5 ms.

What is a good HRV for a 50 year old woman?

The median RMSSD for women aged 50 to 54 is 26.6 ms, falling to 22.5 ms at 55 to 59. The range covering 96 percent of healthy women aged 50 to 54 runs from 7.5 to 96.3 ms.

What is a normal HRV for a 55 year old?

For ages 55 to 59 the median RMSSD is 22.5 ms for women and 21.0 ms for men, with normal ranges of 6.7 to 83.6 ms and 5.5 to 89.5 ms. Those come from healthy adults not on blood pressure, diabetes or psychiatric medication.

What is the average HRV for a 55 year old male?

The median for men aged 55 to 59 is 21.0 ms and the mean is 26.2 ms. The mean is higher because a small number of very high readings pull it up, so the median is the better guide to a typical man that age.

Is an HRV of 20 bad at 55?

No. 20 ms is just below the median for both women (22.5) and men (21.0) aged 55 to 59 and well inside the normal range, which runs down to about 6 ms. A single reading says little; the direction over weeks says more.
