How Does Suunto Measure HRV?

Suunto tracks HRV overnight and calculates a rolling average Root Mean Square of Successive Differences (RMSSD) value, the same standard HRV calculation used across this site's other reviewed devices. Suunto defines a personal normal range over a 60-day window, requiring at least 14 measurements in that period, then compares a rolling 7-day average against it.

What Does Suunto's Resources Widget Measure?

Resources reflects an overall stress-versus-recovery balance rather than a single 0-100 score. A color-coded indicator and a status label, active, inactive, recovering, or stressed, communicate whether the body is depleting or restoring its capacity, drawing on optical heart rate readings taken throughout the day.

Worth knowing

Accuracy depends on correctly configured Max HR and Resting HR values; Suunto's own documentation notes both must match the wearer's actual heart rate for reliable readings, an unusually explicit accuracy caveat for a consumer feature. Unlike Oura's Readiness or Whoop's Recovery Score, Resources reports a state rather than a single comparable daily number.

How Does Suunto Estimate VO2 Max?

Suunto calculates VO2 max alongside Chronic Training Load (CTL), a lactate threshold estimate, and predicted race pace across common distances, drawing on the same underlying training-load physiology engine referenced in past reviews of Suunto's 9-series watches.

Worth knowing

Suunto's fitness-metrics engine has previously been reported as licensed from Firstbeat, the same third-party physiology platform Garmin uses, a real, meaningful contrast with Coros, which built its own EvoLab engine specifically to avoid that licensing dependency.

How Does Suunto Track Sleep?

Suunto tracks sleep primarily through accelerometer (motion) data rather than continuous PPG-based heart signal analysis, with optional blood oxygen and HRV measurement available during sleep as separate, user-enabled features rather than inputs baked into the core sleep-tracking algorithm.

Worth knowing

This is a real, structural difference from Oura, Whoop, or a Fitbit-based device, all of which build sleep staging on top of continuous PPG heart-rate and HRV signals throughout the night. An accelerometer-first approach can register time asleep and restlessness but has a narrower signal to work from for distinguishing sleep stages than a heart-signal-driven algorithm does.

Suunto's real differentiator is depth in the training-load and race-prediction layer, VO2 max, CTL, lactate threshold, and pace prediction together, aimed squarely at the same endurance-athlete audience Coros and Polar Vantage target. What it doesn't offer is a consolidated single readiness number or heart-signal-based sleep staging, both real, structural design choices rather than missing features by accident.
