Oura and Whoop are the two devices most often searched against each other, and most comparisons settle the question on comfort, subscription cost, or app design. This page deliberately skips all of that. Every section below is a comparison of what's actually measured and how strong the evidence behind it is, drawn from each brand's individually-verified metric pages. Which Shows HRV More Directly, Oura or Whoop?

Oura

Never shows a raw HRV number. Reports "HRV Balance," a derived score comparing a rolling two-week average against a three-month personal baseline, which then feeds into Readiness.

Whoop

Calculates HRV during the night's deepest sleep and does show the raw millisecond number in the Health Monitor and Trends views, even though the main daily screen leads with Recovery Score instead.

Where the evidence actually differs

Both use RMSSD-family calculations under the hood, and neither has published head-to-head validation against the other. The real difference isn't accuracy, it's visibility: Whoop surfaces an actual number if a user looks for it; Oura's ring never does, by design.

Which Measures Resting Heart Rate Differently?

Oura

Reports the lowest heart rate recorded, generally captured overnight, an overnight-only measurement window tied to the ring form factor.

Whoop

Measures resting heart rate during the night's deepest sleep specifically, feeding directly into the Recovery Score alongside HRV.

Where the evidence actually differs

Both are overnight-only, unlike Apple's or Garmin's daytime-inclusive methods, so Oura and Whoop RHR readings are closer to directly comparable than either is to a watch brand. Neither publishes a precise timing window (lowest-of-the-night vs. deepest-sleep-specifically), which is a real, unresolved gap in both brands' own documentation.

Which Has the More Rigorous Sleep Score?

Oura

Sleep Score draws on seven inputs: total sleep time, efficiency, restfulness, REM duration, deep sleep duration, latency, and timing consistency, the most stage-architecture-heavy formula among major sleep-scoring brands.

Whoop

Sleep Performance draws on four inputs: sleep sufficiency against hours needed, consistency against the prior four nights, efficiency, and a sleep stress measure, weighting recent consistency more heavily than Oura does.

Where the evidence actually differs

Neither formula is independently validated against polysomnography as a composite score; the individual sleep-stage detection each relies on has been studied separately, but the scoring weights layered on top are each brand's own proprietary choice. A given score on one device isn't measuring the identical combination of things as the same-looking score on the other.

Is Oura's Readiness Score the Same Thing as Whoop's Recovery Score?

Oura

Readiness combines recent activity, sleep, resting heart rate, HRV, and body temperature into a 0-100 score.

Whoop

Recovery Score is a 0-100 composite of HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, sleep, skin temperature, and blood oxygen. HRV is described as the single most influential input; an independent analysis found it explains roughly 56 percent of the score's variance.

Where the evidence actually differs

No. A real peer-reviewed evaluation found composite recovery scores including these two are not methodologically equivalent to each other, despite similar-sounding names and overlapping inputs. A 72 on Oura and a 72 on Whoop, on the same person, on the same day, are not directly comparable numbers.

How Do the Two Brands' Stress Features Compare?

Oura

Daytime Stress gives a real-time four-state read (Stressed, Engaged, Relaxed, Restored) using heart rate, HRV, motion, and body temperature. It's one layer of a three-part system that also includes the 14-day Resilience score and a longer-horizon Cumulative Stress feature.

Whoop

Stress Monitor gives a real-time 0-3 score from heart rate and HRV (log-transformed RMSSD) compared against a rolling 14-day personal baseline, with in-app breathwork prompts when the score climbs.

Where the evidence actually differs

Both are real-time, both use the same underlying HRV/heart-rate signal, and both are proprietary calculations with no independent peer-reviewed validation of the composite score itself. The genuine difference is layering: Oura pairs its real-time reading with two additional longer-horizon scores (Resilience, Cumulative Stress); Whoop's Stress Monitor stands alone without an equivalent multi-timescale structure.

How Does Blood Oxygen Tracking Compare?

Oura

Blood Oxygen Sensing is overnight-only, measuring during sleep periods longer than three hours and reporting Average Blood Oxygen alongside a separate Breathing Regularity score.

Whoop

Blood oxygen tracking arrived with the 4.0 hardware, also overnight-only, paired with a skin temperature sensor that feeds into Recovery.

Where the evidence actually differs

Neither offers a daytime spot-check the way Apple's or Garmin's on-demand modes do. The real distinction is what each brand does with the reading afterward: Oura pairs it with a dedicated Breathing Regularity score, Whoop folds it directly into the Recovery composite instead of surfacing it separately.

A heart-rate-based cardiovascular load score built on a named 2005 energy-expenditure formula. Oura has no direct equivalent; its closest analog is the Activity Score, which measures movement volume rather than cardiovascular load specifically.

A physiological-age estimate from six months of sleep, activity, VO2 max, resting heart rate, and lean body mass data, plus a weekly Pace of Aging score. Comparable in concept to Oura's Cardiovascular Age, but built from a broader, longer-horizon input set.
