Which Measures HRV Differently, Apple Watch or Fitbit?

Apple Watch

Reports raw RMSSD via the Breath app or a Health app export, with no explicit overnight-only restriction documented.

Fitbit

Calculates RMSSD averaged across the full night only. No daytime HRV reading exists on Fitbit at all.

Where the evidence actually differs

Fitbit's overnight-only restriction is an explicit design choice; Apple's isn't restricted the same way, though in practice most raw HRV samples still come from still, low-movement periods. Both use RMSSD-family math, and neither publishes independent head-to-head validation against the other.

Which Measures Resting Heart Rate Differently?

Apple Watch

Takes random samples whenever the accelerometer detects stillness throughout the day, then averages them.

Fitbit

Averages heart rate during non-movement periods across the full day, including daytime, rather than restricting to overnight.

Where the evidence actually differs

Genuinely less divergent than most pairings on this site: both brands sample resting heart rate throughout the day rather than restricting to overnight the way Oura and Whoop do. That makes Apple and Fitbit numbers more directly comparable to each other than either is to a ring-based reading from the same person.

Which Has the More Developed Sleep Feature?

Apple Watch

Since watchOS 9, estimates sleep stages (Awake, REM, Core, Deep) from motion, heart-rate dynamics, and circadian timing, reporting stage breakdown without a composite score.

Fitbit

Sleep Score combines heart rate, total time asleep, and stage breakdown into one 0-100 number, grouped into four bands from Poor to Excellent, available on the free tier.

How Do the Two Brands' ECG Features Compare?

Apple Watch

A genuine single-channel electrocardiogram, FDA-cleared, available across Series 4 and later plus Ultra models, requiring the reader to actively hold the digital crown.

Fitbit

The Fitbit ECG App (also branded the Google ECG App), FDA-cleared and CE-marked, but only on the Sense 2, narrower device availability than Apple's.

Both are genuine single-lead electrocardiograms with real regulatory clearance, not the passive background monitoring some brands substitute for ECG. Do Apple and Fitbit's "Cardio Fitness" Scores Measure the Same Thing?

Apple Watch

Calls its VO2 max estimate "Cardio Fitness," reported as one of four tiers by default, estimated from outdoor walking and running heart-rate response.

Fitbit

Calls its own estimate "Cardio Fitness Score," tracking the relationship between running pace and heart rate, then benchmarking against age, sex, and weight norms.

Where the evidence actually differs

Both brands use the literal name "Cardio Fitness" for their VO2 max estimate, a genuinely confusing coincidence: someone comparing "Cardio Fitness" across an Apple Watch and a Fitbit could easily assume it's the same score with the same formula, when the underlying methods differ. A peer-reviewed validation of the Fitbit Charge 2 found its score gave a consistent, unbiased read but overestimated actual lab-measured VO2 max; no comparably specific independent accuracy study was found for Apple's Cardio Fitness during research for this page.

How Does Blood Oxygen Tracking Compare?

Apple Watch

The Blood Oxygen app takes an on-demand spot-check lasting roughly 15 seconds, reporting an actual oxygen-saturation percentage.

Fitbit

Deliberately doesn't report a percentage at all. "Estimated Oxygen Variation" is a relative overnight graph with a red/yellow/green pattern flagging possible breathing disturbances.

Where the evidence actually differs

This is the starkest divergence on this page. Apple reports an absolute percentage on demand; Fitbit reports a relative overnight pattern and never gives a raw number at all. A reader wanting a specific SpO2 percentage gets one from Apple and cannot get one from Fitbit, regardless of which device is more accurate at the underlying sensing.
