Oura vs Garmin: Which Is More Accurate for Sleep and HRV?
No price, no comfort, no "which should you buy." Just what each device measures, how well-validated that measurement is, and where the two genuinely diverge.
Oura and Garmin are built for different jobs: a ring designed around overnight recovery and sleep, and a watch line built around training. The independent evidence splits the same way. Oura was closer to an ECG for overnight HRV and resting heart rate and has the stronger sleep validation; Garmin was more accurate for heart rate during exercise and has independent VO2 max testing, where Oura has none. Every Garmin sleep study tested the entry-level Vivosmart band rather than a current Venu, Fenix or Forerunner watch. For depth on either, see the full Oura and Garmin profiles.
Which Measures HRV More Accurately?
Oura Ring
Shows average overnight HRV in milliseconds from five-minute samples, with a trend view, according to Oura's documentation. Oura Gen 4 was off by 5.96 percent against an ECG, the closest of five devices tested.
Garmin
Builds two features from the same overnight HRV data, HRV Status as a multi-week trend and Body Battery as a same-day score, according to Garmin. The Fenix 6 was off by 10.52 percent against the same ECG.
Where the evidence actually differs
This is a true head-to-head: both brands were worn on the same nights against the same ECG reference. Only the Fenix 6 was tested for Garmin, so newer watches may differ.
What independent research found
Tested together; Oura closerIn 13 healthy adults over a combined 536 nights, each wearing five devices against a simultaneous ECG, Oura Generation 4 reached a concordance of 0.99 and an average overnight HRV error of 5.96 percent, and Oura Generation 3 0.97 and 7.15 percent. The Garmin Fenix 6 reached 0.87 and 10.52 percent, with an error spread of 8.63 percent (Physiological Reports, 2025). KnowYourPrime's HRV desk rates consumer wearable HRV accuracy as Uncertain across the category.
Which Measures Resting Heart Rate More Accurately?
Oura Ring
Reports an average and a lowest overnight resting heart rate from readings every 10 minutes, according to Oura. Overnight error against an ECG was 1.67 to 1.94 percent.
Garmin
Defines daily resting heart rate as the lowest 30-minute average in a 24-hour period, according to Garmin. The Fenix 6 was left out of the same study's resting heart rate analysis.
Where the evidence actually differs
Oura has an ECG-referenced overnight resting heart rate result and Garmin does not, because the one head-to-head study excluded the Garmin from that part of its analysis for methodological inconsistencies.
What independent research found
Oura tested, Garmin excludedAgainst a simultaneous ECG, overnight resting heart rate from Oura Generation 3 and 4 erred by 1.67 and 1.94 percent, the closest of the devices in that analysis, while the Garmin Fenix 6 was excluded from it (Physiological Reports, 2025). An earlier Oura ring, Generation 2, correlated with a research-grade heart monitor at r = 0.9 and read about 1 beat per minute low (JMIR Formative Research, 2022).
Which Is More Accurate for Heart Rate During Exercise?
Oura Ring
Oura Ring Gen 3 was among the less accurate devices for heart rate during rest, mental stress and walking in a 10-device comparison.
Garmin
Two current Garmins were in the same comparison, and a systematic review of 158 studies named Garmin and Apple Watch the most accurate brands for heart rate.
Where the evidence actually differs
Daytime and exercise heart rate is where the two brands reverse. A ring measured at the finger during movement did worse than wrist devices in the one study that tested both.
What independent research found
Garmin aheadIn 45 adults tested at rest, under mental stress and while walking in neutral, hot and cold rooms against an ECG chest strap, the Oura Ring Gen 3 was among the devices with larger errors, a group whose mean absolute errors ran 9 to 14 beats per minute, while the Garmin Vivosmart 5 and Vivoactive 5 were not in that group (JMIR Formative Research, 2026). Across 158 publications on nine brands, heart rate was most accurate for Apple Watch and Garmin (JMIR mHealth and uHealth, 2020).
Which Tracks Sleep More Accurately?
Oura Ring
Did not differ significantly from a sleep lab for total, light or deep sleep in 96 healthy adults, and on any stage in a separate 35-person test.
Garmin
Every independent sleep-lab study tested the Vivosmart 4 band. It detected sleep well but wake poorly, with weak stage agreement.
Where the evidence actually differs
One study tested both in the same sleep lab on the same night. Garmin was the only device of five that could not estimate total sleep as well as a research-grade activity monitor; Oura consistently underestimated light sleep.
What independent research found
Tested together; Oura strongerIn 53 young adults in a sleep lab, five consumer trackers ran alongside polysomnography. Every device except the Garmin Vivosmart estimated total sleep about as well as research-grade actigraphy. The Oura ring underestimated light sleep of any duration, while the Garmin's deep-sleep bias was low; REM bias was low for all devices (Sensors, 2024). Separately, the Oura Ring Gen3 matched the lab on total, light and deep sleep in 96 healthy adults, with 94.4 percent sleep detection and 73.0 to 74.6 percent wake detection (Sleep Medicine, 2024), and showed no stage difference in 35 adults (Sensors, 2024). The Garmin Vivosmart 4 detected 98 percent of sleep but only 28 percent of wake, with stage agreement of 0.20 kappa, in 18 adults (PLOS One, 2020), and was not among the three better devices in a six-device sleep-lab study (Sleep Advances, 2025). In sleep-clinic patients Oura's four-stage accuracy fell to 53.18 percent (Scientific Reports, 2025).
Readiness Score vs Body Battery
Oura Ring
Readiness combines nine contributors, including resting heart rate, HRV Balance, temperature and sleep, according to Oura.
Garmin
Body Battery combines HRV, stress, sleep and activity into a same-day energy estimate, and Training Readiness is a separate score, according to Garmin.
Where the evidence actually differs
Neither score has been independently validated. A review of 14 composite scores from 10 manufacturers, including Oura Readiness and Resilience and Garmin Body Battery and Training Readiness, found none disclosed its exact formula and few offered any validation.
Which Estimates VO2 Max?
Oura Ring
No independent study of an Oura VO2 max or cardio fitness estimate is in the evidence behind this site.
Garmin
Estimates VO2 max from heart rate against pace during runs, according to Garmin. The Fenix 6 was within a 7.05 percent average error of a lab test.
Where the evidence actually differs
This is Garmin's clearest advantage: its VO2 max estimate has been independently tested on two watch generations, and Oura's has not been tested at all.
What independent research found
Garmin tested, Oura notIn 19 adults, the Garmin Fenix 6 estimated VO2 max with a mean absolute percentage error of 7.05 percent and a concordance of 0.73 against a laboratory gas analyser (Sensors, 2025). An older Garmin, the Forerunner 920XT, reached 7.3 percent but underestimated on average, and was the only one of five wrist devices in that study with an error under 10 percent (International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2019).
Common questions
Is Oura or Garmin better for sleep tracking?
On the published evidence, Oura. In one sleep lab that tested both on the same night, the Garmin Vivosmart was the only device of five that could not estimate total sleep as well as a research-grade activity monitor, while Oura underestimated light sleep. Oura also matched the lab on total, light and deep sleep in a separate study of 96 adults. Every Garmin sleep study tested the Vivosmart band, not a current Garmin watch.
Is Oura or Garmin more accurate for HRV?
Oura, in the one study that tested both against a simultaneous ECG: overnight HRV error was 5.96 percent for Oura Gen 4 and 7.15 percent for Oura Gen 3, against 10.52 percent for the Garmin Fenix 6, across 536 nights in 13 adults.
Is Garmin sleep tracking accurate?
For total sleep and timing, roughly; for stages, weakly. The Garmin Vivosmart 4 detected 98 percent of sleep but only 28 percent of wake, with stage agreement of 0.20 kappa, against a sleep lab. No independent sleep-lab study of a current Venu, Fenix or Forerunner watch is in the evidence behind this site.
Is the Oura Ring accurate for heart rate during exercise?
Less so than wrist devices. In a 10-device comparison against an ECG chest strap, the Oura Ring Gen 3 was among the devices with larger errors during rest, mental stress and walking. Overnight, its resting heart rate was within 1.67 to 1.94 percent of an ECG.
Which is more accurate overall, Oura or Garmin?
They lead in different places. Oura was closer to an ECG overnight for HRV and resting heart rate and has the stronger sleep validation. Garmin was more accurate for heart rate during activity and has independently tested VO2 max estimates, which Oura lacks.
This page won't tell you which to buy. Battery life, form factor, GPS and training features matter to that decision and none of them are evidence questions. What the evidence supports: Oura is closer to an ECG overnight and has the stronger sleep validation; Garmin is more accurate during exercise and has tested VO2 max.
