Which Shows HRV More Directly?
Fitbit
Calculates HRV using RMSSD, averaged across the full night, and shows it as an actual number in the Health Metrics dashboard. It's overnight-only: no daytime HRV reading at all.
Oura
Shows nightly average HRV in milliseconds, with a per-night graph at five-minute resolution and a longer-run trend view. It additionally derives "HRV Balance," comparing a rolling two-week average against a three-month personal baseline, which feeds into Readiness.

Both are overnight-only, using the same underlying RMSSD calculation, but Fitbit surfaces the raw number where Oura deliberately hides it behind a derived score, the same design-philosophy split seen between Ultrahuman and Oura elsewhere on this site.
What each brand's own evidence base actually shows
Oura has the validation, Fitbit doesn'tOura's nightly RMSSD has four independent ECG comparisons behind it, agreeing on strong nightly-average accuracy with known limits in short windows and in wearers over 45. No dedicated Fitbit HRV-versus-ECG validation turned up in this search; Fitbit's own published evidence base is concentrated on sleep-stage and heart-rate accuracy rather than HRV specifically.

Fitbit's full-day average and Oura's overnight-only minimum are structurally different calculations that can produce meaningfully different numbers for the same person on the same day, not just a rounding difference between similar methods.
Is Fitbit's Daily Readiness the Same Kind of Thing as Oura's Readiness?
Fitbit
Daily Readiness Score, a Premium-only feature, weighs HRV, resting heart rate, and sleep quantity and architecture roughly equally with recent activity.
Oura
Readiness combines recent activity, sleep patterns, resting heart rate, HRV, and body temperature into a 0-100 score, included with the Oura app's own required subscription rather than gated as a separate premium tier.
Where the evidence actually differs
Similar input categories, different business models: Fitbit's core hardware works without a subscription but readiness specifically sits behind a Premium paywall, while Oura's readiness comes bundled into the subscription the ring already requires for full functionality. A real peer-reviewed evaluation has found composite recovery and readiness scores across brands generally aren't methodologically equivalent to each other.
How Differently Do the Two Brands Report Blood Oxygen?
Fitbit
Reports two separate things: an actual nightly-average "SpO2" percentage, and a separate "Estimated Oxygen Variation" relative overnight graph with a red, yellow, or green pattern flagging possible breathing disturbances.
Oura
Blood Oxygen Sensing is also overnight-only, but reports Average Blood Oxygen as an actual figure alongside a separate Breathing Regularity score.

What Fitbit Has That Oura Doesn't
On-demand ECG (Sense 2)
Oura's ring form factor has no equivalent, a real structural limitation shared with every other ring this site profiles.
Raw HRV number
Both show an actual millisecond figure. Fitbit reports RMSSD on its Health Metrics dashboard; Oura reports a nightly average HRV and additionally layers its HRV Balance interpretation on top.
What Oura Has That Fitbit Doesn't
Live CGM integration
Oura's 2025 Dexcom Stelo integration. No equivalent feature was found on Fitbit's page.
Cardiovascular Age
A deep-learning vascular-age estimate from overnight PPG. A 2026 study of 160 adults found it agreed with a clinical-grade fingertip sensor to a similar order of accuracy (mean absolute error 7.25 years for the ring versus 6.28 years for the clinical device; Yilmaz et al., PLOS Digital Health, doi:10.1371/journal.pdig.0001329). The study's senior author sits on Oura Health's medical advisory board; the paper states the work itself was funded and conducted independently of Oura. No equivalent feature was found on Fitbit's page.
This page won't tell you which to buy. Form factor, subscription model, and app design all matter to that decision and none of them are evidence questions, so none of them are covered here.
