Which Measures HRV Over a Wider Window?

Fitbit

Calculates HRV using RMSSD, averaged across the full night. Overnight-only: no daytime HRV reading at all.

Whoop

Calculates HRV continuously and specifically during the night's deepest sleep, feeding it directly into Recovery Score as what Whoop calls the single most influential input, though the weighting is not published and no independent analysis quantifying it could be located.

Where the evidence actually differs

Fitbit's full-night average is a broader window than Whoop's specifically-timed deepest-sleep measurement. Whoop's tighter timing plus its outsized weight in Recovery Score means a single bad night's deep sleep phase can move Whoop's headline number more directly than the same disruption would move Fitbit's.

What each brand's own evidence base actually shows

Thin on both sides

Neither device has a dedicated HRV-versus-ECG validation in the literature this search covered. Both brands' published evidence is concentrated elsewhere: Fitbit's on sleep-stage and heart-rate accuracy, Whoop's on heart-rate accuracy during rapid changes rather than the HRV calculation itself.

Which Measures Resting Heart Rate Over a Different Window?

Fitbit

Averages heart rate during non-movement periods across the full day, including daytime.

Whoop

Measures resting heart rate during the night's deepest sleep specifically, the same tightly-timed window used for HRV.

Where the evidence actually differs

Same pattern as HRV: Fitbit's number reflects an average across many low-movement daytime moments, Whoop's reflects one specific nightly window. These are not directly comparable numbers even when both are labeled "resting heart rate."

What independent research found

Both accurate, different conditions

A 2022 evaluation of a Fitbit Charge 4 against a Holter ECG found its error stayed under 10 percent overall, best during seated rest and weakest during high-intensity intervals. Whoop's closest evidence is a 2025 study built specifically to test rapid heart-rate changes, which found a Whoop 4.0 acceptable at rest but less accurate during those transitions, a pattern shared by every wrist-worn device that study tested. Neither study tested the two devices against each other directly.

Is Fitbit's Daily Readiness the Same Kind of Thing as Whoop's Recovery Score?

Fitbit

Daily Readiness Score, a Premium-only add-on feature, weighs HRV, resting heart rate, and sleep quantity and architecture roughly equally with recent activity.

Whoop

Recovery Score is a 0-100 composite of HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, sleep, skin temperature, and blood oxygen, and is the central number the entire product is organized around, not an optional add-on.

Where the evidence actually differs

This is a real business-model contrast, not just a feature-list difference: Fitbit's core hardware works fully without a subscription, with readiness specifically gated behind Premium; Whoop's entire product is subscription-based hardware-plus-software, with Recovery Score as its organizing daily metric from day one. A real peer-reviewed evaluation has found composite recovery scores across brands generally aren't methodologically equivalent to each other regardless of business model.

Does Whoop Have Anything Like Fitbit's ECG Feature?

Fitbit

The Sense, Sense 2, Charge 5, and Charge 6 offer on-demand AFib monitoring through an ECG app, paired with a passive Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification using the everyday optical sensor. Older Fitbit models lack the required hardware.

Whoop

No ECG on the standard Whoop 4.0 or 5.0 band. Whoop MG, a separate medical-focused device requiring a WHOOP Life membership, added an on-demand ECG feature called Heart Screener via a conductive clasp, not available on 4.0 or 5.0 and gated by region.

Where the evidence actually differs

A real gap on the devices most people own: Fitbit's ECG now spans four current models, Whoop's standard band has none. Whoop MG closes that gap on paper, but only for members on that specific hardware, not the 4.0 or 5.0 most Whoop users have.
