Sleep research has long found that people are often poor judges of their own sleep duration and quality, and a new look at self-reports against recorded brain activity found the mismatch between the two, called sleep discrepancy, is systematic rather than random, though exactly how large it runs and who diverges most is still an early, not-yet-peer-reviewed finding.
Two numbers, one night
The tracker flags a rough night, restless, short on deep sleep, and the day that follows feels completely ordinary. Or it's the reverse: a green sleep score sits next to a morning that feels foggy and slow. Either way, the instinct is to ask which reading is the mistake.
Sleep research treats this less as a malfunction and more as an expected feature of comparing two different kinds of measurement, a person's own sense of their night against what a sensor recorded.

Why 'how you feel' and 'what got recorded' aren't the same instrument
The gap between self-report and objective sleep measurement isn't new to this one finding. The Watson review describes it as an established enough pattern in athlete populations that self-assessment alone is considered unreliable for tracking sleep, which is part of the case for objective, sensor-based sleep tracking in the first place.
What the new, unreviewed preprint adds is texture. Even among methods that ask a person to report on their own sleep, a same-day diary tracked recorded sleep timing far more closely than a questionnaire asking about someone's habitual, typical sleep. That distinction between a fresh daily account and a general impression of one's own sleep pattern is exactly the kind of gap a morning feeling and a tracker score could fall into.
What this doesn't settle
None of this tells a person whether their tracker or their body is the more accurate read on any single night. Sleep discrepancy research describes a pattern across groups of people, not a rule for interpreting one individual's specific mismatch.
And the newer finding is a different kind of evidence than the rest. As an unreviewed preprint, its specific correlation figures and the factors it links to greater discrepancy haven't yet gone through peer review, and could change once they do. Treating a single night's score as a verdict is a separate issue from what this research actually measures, which is a pattern across many nights and many people.
The preprint's sample came from a single study population, healthy adults completing a structured week-long testing plan, not a validation of any specific consumer wearable, and its findings have not yet been peer-reviewed or replicated.
