Why Your Recovery Score and How You Feel Can Disagree
A recovery score and a gut feeling are measuring different things, and the research on perceived exertion shows exactly where they part ways.
This piece covers what sport-science research on perceived recovery and exertion shows about the gap between self-rated and monitored recovery. It does not cover the validity of any specific consumer wearable's recovery algorithm, which is addressed elsewhere on this site.
A low recovery score and a body that feels fine, or the reverse, are not a sign that one reading is wrong. Coaches and athletes rating the same training session routinely land on different numbers for how recovered or how hard that session was, and the gap is wide enough that sport scientists have spent decades trying to reconcile subjective and objective load monitoring rather than picking one as the truth. Your wearable and your legs are two separate instruments, not two attempts at the same measurement.
Two different questions, one number
People describe the same disconnect in different words: their recovery score says green but the first mile feels heavy, or the score says red on a day nothing hurts. The natural read is that the device got it wrong.
That framing assumes the score and the feeling are two attempts at measuring the same thing. But coach and athlete monitoring research treats them as separate signals from the start, one built from external and physiological load, the other from a person's own read on effort and freshness.

- In a study of 56 athletes across women's volleyball, soccer, and basketball plus their coaches, coach-estimated and athlete-estimated ratings of perceived exertion for the same practice, taken independently about 15 to 20 minutes afterward, were compared against each other and against heart-rate-based load measures.
- A survey of 41 high-level football clubs across Europe, the United States, and Australia found nearly all teams used GPS and heart-rate monitors for every session, while 68% also used athlete questionnaires and 41% used submaximal exercise testing to track player response, run alongside rather than in place of the objective data.
Why practitioners still run both
If a heart-rate-based number and a person's own rating always agreed, nobody would need both. The Akenhead survey found the opposite pattern in practice: nearly every one of the 41 clubs surveyed ran GPS and heart-rate monitoring on every athlete, every session, and most of them also collected subjective ratings on top of it rather than treating one as a stand-in for the other.
That double-tracking is the field's own admission that a load number and a felt sense of recovery carry different information. Day-to-day noise in the objective score is one reason they can split. A person's mood, sleep debt, or expectations going into the session is another. Neither study here isolates which factor dominates on any given day, they just document that the split happens.
The Kraft study measured perceived exertion and recovery in a group of collegiate-level team-sport athletes and their coaches; it did not test whether the same coach-versus-athlete gap holds for solo endurance training, recreational exercisers, or the specific recovery algorithms used in consumer wearables.
What a mismatch is actually telling you
None of this settles which number to believe on a morning when the two disagree. It does mean the disagreement itself is not evidence that the tracker is malfunctioning, or that a person is imagining how their body feels.
The more useful question, per this line of monitoring research, is not which reading is correct but what each one is built from. A heart-rate-derived score reflects autonomic load and recovery markers the body doesn't self-report. A felt sense of readiness folds in sleep, motivation, and soreness the sensor never sees. What actually goes into that score and what a person's own perception draws on are genuinely different inputs. Not the same signal, read at different resolutions.
